Knoll uses modern design to connect people to their work, their lives, their world. Since 1938, Knoll has been recognised internationally for creating workplace and residential furnishings that inspire, evolve, and endure.

The history of Knoll is rich in important references: the birth of the Modern movement and its protagonists; the idea of innovation combined to tradition; the capacity to create highly versatile pieces not only able to meet personal tastes, but timeless in design.

Today, Knoll's commitment to modern, sustainable design have yielded a unique portfolio of thoughtful products that respond and adapt to changing workplace and residential needs.

Knoll showroom and the Knolls

Founded in New York City in 1938 by Hans Knoll (the son of Walter Knoll) and Florence Knoll (née Schust; she studied under Charles Eames, Walter Gropius, and Marcel Breuer), the Knolls were influenced by the Bauhaus movement’s philosophy of “total architecture”, where furniture complements architectural space to create a harmonious design.

This led to the creation of the Knoll Planning Unit, which revolutionised standards for the 20th Century office environment by providing a complete approach to interior design where meticulous attention to the smallest details defined Knoll’s status as not only a furniture manufacturer, but a “highly regarded purveyor of space”.

Knoll history

It is this vision of furniture as an integral component of designed space—rather than an accessory or afterthought—that defines the Knoll aesthetic and, 80 years later, makes Knoll one of the most enduring and influential names in modern furniture.

As Benjamin Pardo, current director of Knoll states: “Knoll stands for a rigorous approach to planning that acknowledges the relationship between architecture, furniture, and space. We are united by a definitive process and a distinct modern sensibility.”

Cesca chair and Barcelona Chair

Knoll collaborated with influential designers including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia to produce iconic and timeless pieces such as the Barcelona Chair, the Wassily Chair, the Womb Chair, the Tulip Chair, the Cesca Chair, and the Saarinen table series.

Through such pieces, Knoll was instrumental in establishing a new language of furniture design that has reverberated across the 20th and 21st Centuries, significantly shaping the world we move through today. Many of these classic Knoll pieces are on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, attesting to their seminal status. Today, the Knoll roster continues to evolve with the inclusion of important contemporary designers including Piero Lissoni, Antonio Citterio, and Marc Newson.
