Consolidate: An exhibition of unique, sustainable work by Designcraft staff

Sustainable pieces by Designcraft’s own talented makers, made as part of the 2024 Craft + Design Canberra Festival

Designcraft presents Consolidate, an exhibition of unique work by some of our creative and highly skilled makers.

Running from 1Nov - 13 Dec 2024, Consolidate responds to the question of what can be made from materials that would otherwise go unused—factory offcuts, bits and bobs, things that might easily be discarded. The answer is a stunning collection of work that is variously beautiful, intricate, refined, functional, and unconventional.

Running as part of the 2024 Craft+Design Festival, and the  festival’s theme of ‘Regenerate’, Designcraft’s designers and makers show that used and neglected materials present no barrier to crafting something of singular aesthetic value. In this way, Consolidate resonates perfectly with Designcraft’s environmental ethos: to tread lightly on the planet by taking responsibility, minimising environmental damage, and producing and selling the highest quality furniture, designed to last a lifetime.

Take the series of seven exquisite boxes made by one of Designcraft’s most skilled cabinetmakers Steve Van Ewyk, which has become the talk of the Designcraft lunchroom. Highly intricate in design and execution, each one assumes a unique shape and finish, from cylinders to triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal prisms, and from diverse timbers to aluminium, stone-like acrylics, and cork and leather linings.

These boxes are so unique—functional storage meets brilliance in craft and design! And they're for sale!

Other pieces in the exhibition include a collection of hand turned pens, a refurbished Shoji light box (rescued from a bygone Canberra restaurant), artworks made from discarded timber, two custom snare drums, and beautiful pieces of furniture including coffee and side tables, a stellar writing desk, inventive stools, and two chairs, the first inspired by both the Eames chair and the Queensland Squatters chair, and the second by the classic Windsor chair. Finally, and most eccentrically, there is a collection of ‘framed Lego vignettes’, which you’ll just have to see for yourself.

Designcraft are pleased to share the skill, craftmanship and creativity of our wonderful staff, both those in our factory or in our office. We invite you to view this exhibition in Designcraft's showroom (upstairs), on until 1pm 20th December 2024. Visit Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm.
