Eames x Art of Play

Designed by Art of Play in close collaboration with the Eames Office.  A tribute to the timeless sensibilities of Charles & Ray Eames.

Hang-It-All

The much anticipated second edition of Eames Playing Cards pays homage to the iconic Hang-It-All wall rack with bold lines, colourful interconnected circles, and a nostalgic colour palette.

Each deck is imbued with Charles and Ray’s playfulness and philosophy of finding unexpected joy in everyday experiences and objects.

The cards forego traditional playing card symbology with a simplified numbering system featuring whimsical spherical pips on all 52 cards. This creative decision, and the inclusion of two minimalist Eames Office Sunburst “jokers,” provide the unique experience of defying the gravity of expectations to embrace the Eamesean spirit of exploration.

Starburst

The first edition of Eames Playing Cards showcases the Eames Office Starburst Logo on the backs.

This iconic emblem was a recurring motif in the work of both Charles and Ray. Here it signifies their boundless creative energy—an explosion of light reaching for the outer limits of design’s true purpose.

The unique numbering system on the faces of the cards enables acts of cardistry to function as subtle homages to the Eameses’ classic film “Powers of Ten.” The court cards honour the natural majesty they found in elemental geometric shapes. Mathematics, form, and the critical role of constraints in design are threads woven throughout the Eameses’ life and work.

Kite

Much anticipated third edition of Eames Playing Cards, “Kite” takes inspiration from a tissue-paper kite designed by the Eames Office in 1950. The simplicity of form and whimsical color-scheme were drawn directly from the original artifact, a high-design toy which reminds us to “Take your pleasure seriously.”

The Little Toy

The fourth edition of Eames Playing Cards pays homage to The Little Toy, a small variation of The Toy. In contrast to its larger predecessor, which was made for people to play “in,” Charles and Ray made this design for children and adults to play “with.”

The Eames Playing Cards come in a letterpress printed box celebrating the iconic home Charles and Ray designed and built for themselves and showcasing the beautiful cards’ gold and white Hang-It-All backing.
