The Local Project in partnership with Herman Miller present
THE RETURN TO THE WORKPLACE SERIES // Episode 3
featuring Rebecca Trenorden of Carr, Melbourne, VIC
For Rebecca Trenorden, associate director at Carr, the return to the workplace after the upheaval of 2020 has brought into focus the importance of workplace design that supports wellbeing. Using their expertise and innovation to adapt both their own studio and the workplaces those of their clients, Carr is creating spaces that are flexible, intuitive and inspiring. “In coming back to the office, health and wellbeing is paramount,” she says. “There’s cognitive health, physical health and emotional health, which I think we all are more mindful of now. So, a lot of our clients are looking for settings that they can tweak without committing to something fixed.” In the Carr studio, spaces for teams to get together in a safe way have become highlighted. “The perimeter is now used for stand-up project reviews to maintain a really clear walkway, and then we’ve got additional project spaces in our conference rooms as well for people to get together,” she says.
The studio has been equipped with Herman Miller since well before the pandemic – “you look around our studio and we have a lot of Eames furniture and it’s just lasted such a long time. We all sit on Aeron chairs that are 10-plus years old and we love it - it’s comfortable, looks great and it’s timeless,” Rebeca explains. Presently, however, the Herman Miller Catena Office Landscape, has come into its own. Carr is utilising the Catena design to create workplaces that intuitively facilitate safer interactions. “It’s a device that can be used to create boundaries and work settings between spaces, so it’s really intuitive,” she says. “It’s not about putting up signs everywhere, it’s about designing a workspace [where] people can feel safe and be safe.”
